Major Lessons from the Heineken Champions Cup's Opening Weekend

Following the initial matches of the 2025-26 Champions Cup wrapped up, we delve into the primary lessons stemming from the games.

Top 14 superiority has been the narrative in the past few campaigns, with the past five winners all representing France's elite division. However, the opening round showcased a number of convincing performances from emerging rivals.

Bordeaux Look Set to Retain Their Crown

Reigning title-holders Bordeaux Begles were a class apart in the competition last season, dismantling Toulouse in the last four and subsequently Northampton in the final.

Currently sitting sixth in the domestic standings, doubts have been raised about their ability to repeat the accomplishment this year. Yet, in their opener, Bordeaux issued a reminder that they are more than capable of securing back-to-back titles with a high-scoring triumph on foreign soil in South Africa.

Faced with a tough assignment at the Bulls' fortress against a strong Bulls side including stars like Willie le Roux, Handre Pollard, and Canan Moodie, they found themselves trailing 33-22 at the interval.

Yet, as champions do, they unleashed their power in the second half, roaring back to claim a 46-33 victory – keeping the Bulls without a point after the interval.

France international phenoms Damian Penaud and global award contender Louis Bielle-Biarrey both got on the scoresheet. Any side with such firepower on the flanks stands a good chance against any competition.

Powerful Bath Seem Poised of Going the Distance

Bath's only triumph in Europe dates back almost 30 years ago. Since that time, they have perhaps not been better equipped to win it again.

The reigning domestic title-holders are setting the pace at home after six games and will be hoping to translate that form into the Champions Cup – on the back of a surprise group-stage exit in the last campaign.

Johann van Graan's side looked a highly composed and composed outfit in their 40-14 win over Munster, who are third in the United Rugby Championship.

They marry creative spark – earning the bonus point inside 20 minutes at the Rec – with resolute defending, holding their opponents at arm's length when they looked like mounting a dramatic comeback.

With stars such as Finn Russell and Ben Spencer directing play and quality reserves throughout the team, they must be viewed as credible threats for a maiden Champions Cup since 1998.

Bath's pivotal moment in the pools last season occurred in the second round, an agonising 22-21 loss at Benetton with a squad players.

After winning a league trophy in their history and setting the pace in England once more, Van Graan might decide to concentrate more effort on the Champions Cup this season.

Glasgow Deal Sale a Significant Setback

The tournament contains quality outfits everywhere you look, but Pool One appears poised to be one of the tightest.

In the tournament's current format, a lot is emphasized regarding securing home wins, which is why Glasgow's win on the road at Sale on the opening night might just be pivotal.

The Scottish side were two scores behind after 20 minutes but fought back impressively, and two tries during the beginning of the second period gave them a precious five points.

With this result, they provided their prospects of qualification a significant early boost and, conversely, handed a hefty blow to the Sharks.

With the red and blacks – imperious 56-19 conquerors of the Sharks – and Saracens, who easily overcame Clermont, in the same section, we are likely to see plenty of fireworks.

And what of Glasgow's old rivals Edinburgh? They turned in one of their top continental showings in a long time to stun former champions Toulon 33-20, on a successful weekend for Scottish rugby.

Is Ioane the Final Piece of the Leinster Quest?

Should you pick one side you would predict to be in the mix at the sharp end of the Champions Cup, it would be four-time winners Leinster.

However in recent campaigns it has not worked out, as they have been favourites but fallen short. Runners-up three years in a row between 2022-24, they looked the team to beat the previous campaign after backing up a 62-0 thrashing of Harlequins in the round of 16 with a 52-0 demolition over Glasgow in the quarter-final.

It was thought that Kiwi international Jordie Barrett would be the key player to take them over the line, but they were surprised and endured a stunning upset to Northampton Saints in the semi.

Now they are bringing in another Kiwi, this time with Rieko Ioane, who claimed a scoring pass on his first appearance in Saturday's 45-28 success against Harlequins.

Could Ioane be the player to secure European glory to Ireland for the first time since 2018?

Stormers Seem Prepared to Challenge

From the moment the SA franchises became part of the Champions Cup in 2022-23, the furthest any of their teams have got is the quarter-finals, and the previous season no South African side managed to make it out of the pool phase, with often rotated sides selected.

Could this be the season that changes? The Stormers are leading the URC and started their Champions Cup adventure with a 26-17 victory on the road at Bayonne on Friday.

The words from players and coaches were promising too, with the squad and staff speaking of their goals, and the likes of stars Cobus Reinach, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, and Damian Willemse not involved for the first match.

The Stormers appear the best bet for a South African side to go deep into the competition, although don't count out the Sharks and Bulls, who were defeated in the opening round but did face Toulouse and Bordeaux respectively.

The English and French Sides Deliver a Thrilling Contest

There were several candidates for best fixture, and the Northampton vs. Pau game was among the best.

Pau have been having a brilliant campaign, guided by stars Julian Montoya and Facundo Isa and ex-England half-back Dan Robson.

They are currently second in the Top 14 and the atmosphere was electric at the Stade du Hameau|their home ground|Pau's
