Astronaut Shares Emotional Distress After ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also featured high-profile passengers.

The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, referring to a phone call from a fellow crew member in the days following the landing.

She described the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and operated research during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her studies and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her heritage – was buried under the deluge of gendered attacks.

She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Months following fulfilling her dream, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the well-wishers whose kindness helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.

She added that even with the backlash, important benefits had come out of the flight, including elevated attention for her scientific work and platforms for her activism.

About the Mission

The fully automated spacecraft launched from its launch site in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that crossed the edge of space.
